I was poking around Craigslist one day and came across this amazing 1964 Singer Touch & Sew! I couldn’t believe it. It is in a cabinet and had the original manual and all the accessories!

Christmas is Coming…

Preparations are under way at the Metter house. Tree is up and decorated. Stockings hung by the fireplace. Homemade holiday gifts are flying out from under my sewing machine needle daily along with all the other treats and crafts that the girls are helping me with. I should be watching what I eat since I will be wearing a bathing suit in a few weeks, but baking has been on my mind along with the 10 degree weather.

For the second year we have attended my daughter’s holiday festival at her school. This is the second fairy house that she has made. This is by far her favorite activity offered during this magical day.

I got an early Christmas present this year. My new dress form. I am so excited to move forward with my DIY Fashion Design. I guess after the holiday gift making I will have more time to focus on my self imposed studies.

I have not given up on DIY fashion design. I know I said I would post every Friday, but I just haven’t had the time to take and upload the photos of my progress. I have purchased sketch books and actually started sketching in one of them. For my larger, less portable, book I got a Strathmore 400 Series 11″x14″. I also purchased a hard covered Moleskine to throw in my purse. Then I saw, and just HAD to create one of these beauties at a craft market yesterday.

I have personalized my book as assigned in Workout 2.

I have begun sketching things around the house and in the backyard as assigned in Workout 3.

I just discovered this blog. Gertie’s plan to tackle a vintage Vogue sewing book is courageous and just plain cool. What a great idea.

I received my Vintage Swap package from my enchanting swap partner Suzanne. Wow, what a wonderful box of treasures! I sure do hope she likes what I sent her.

My traveling dolls are headed to a fund raising silent auction today with my grandma Goldie and great aunt Pearl. I hope people love them and bid high.

My book club girls and I went to see Wicked last night. It was a spectacular show. The costumes were amazing. I needed something fun and dramatic (and green) to wear. Here is my Wicked scarf. I followed this idea on the Craftzine blog. I think it would be great in just about any color!

DIY Fashion Design 101

In my high school year book it says I wanted to be an interior decorator. However, I think what I really always wanted to be was a fashion designer. I was photographed by our high school year book committee as one of the fashionable kids in our school. Don’t judge, it was 1988.

I would sit for hours combing through the pages of Seventeen Magazine looking at the styles. I was figuring out how to replicate the look with the money I made babysitting and working at DQ. I remember painting a pair of white Keds with hot pink fabric paint, because Seventeen said it was cool. I loved those shoes. I wish I had them now. Today you can design your own Keds online at the Keds Studio.
In middle school I would spend hours upon hours sitting at the bottom of our front steps playing in a mud puddle. I sculpted little bears out of the mud and dressed them with leaves, grass and flowers.
As a younger girl I was obsessed with my Barbie dolls and would make clothes and accessories out of anything I could find. In grade school, my best friend and I even tried our hand at making paper clothes. We were trying to make costumes showing what pilgrims wore. Unfortunately, we failed the assignment. They fell apart during our presentation; but with better skills and supplies I think it could have been really cool! Check this out.
I grew up around three women who could really sew. My grandma has made porcelain dolls for as long as I can remember. She makes all of their clothes right down to the tiniest of details. Whenever I have a problem, she is the first one I call for help. My aunt is a true artist. She can paint, draw, photograph, cut paper, knit, crochet, sew…you name it. She inspires me to be creative and use my imagination. My mom is a talented sewer as well and made her own clothes when she was in school. She made her own prom dresses and her wedding dress. She also made my prom dresses. She crafted throughout my childhood and created original ideas to sell at craft shows.
So, I have been day dreaming about going back to school for fashion design. The Academy of Art University in SF offers a BFA in Fashion Design that you can take all online! BUT WAIT! Who am I kidding? I have two young girls, parent council meetings, play dates, music classes, holiday gifts to make, piles of laundry, dishes and long long lists of things I should be doing. Not to mention the price tag. So I have come up with a plan to challenge myself without a strict timeline, learn something new and hopefully have some fun.

I plan to do all 200 projects or “workouts” and post my progress every Friday. Who knows how long this will take to complete? With exercises ranging from choosing a sketchbook and doing research all the way to draping and designing my own collection, I am sure to learn something. I have already competed Workout 1 – Choosing a sketchbook , so now on to Workout 2 – Personalize your sketchbook.

Here is another sweet vintage linen turned into a child’s dress or tunic. I love searching for these at garage sales and estate sales. They sometimes have stains or small holes, but once refashioned they become beautiful new clothes for my two princesses.

Smashing Smocking

I am mad. Make that CRAZY about elastic thread and smocking! I have made both my girls smocked sundresses from a pattern found in the Heather Ross “Weekend Sewing” book. Heather was also very nice to post an adult version on her blog. So, I made one for my mom too. I am now getting set to make myself one.
